These can be three different companies. The important question is not only “Which airline flies there?” It is “Which program can book that airline, and can my points reach that program?”

The repeatable method

Five steps for almost any points booking

The airlines and programs change, but the safe process stays the same.

Inventory the points you already have
Separate transferable card points from miles already held by an airline program. Different balances usually cannot be pooled into one award unless they can all transfer into the same booking program.

Find programs your points can reach
A transfer partner is a loyalty program that can receive your card points. Use Discover for route ideas and the Directory to see the supported paths, ratios, minimums, card restrictions, and evidence level.

Open the guided live check
Choose a path in Discover, then use its live-check guide. It carries the airports, dates, cabin, travelers, booking program, and operating airline into a checklist you can copy or take to the official program.

Compare only bookable options
Confirm the total miles, taxes and surcharges, number of seats, cabin on every segment, change rules, and transfer timing. An award chart or route idea is useful context, but it is not a live seat.

Verify, transfer, and book in that order
Bring the live quote to Verify. Transfer only when the exact award is still visible and you accept the risk that availability could change while points move. Complete the booking through the program that quoted the award.

The safe order

Find the award first. Check the transfer math second. Move points last.

Know the three roles

Points currency: The rewards you begin with, such as Chase Ultimate Rewards, American Express Membership Rewards, or Bilt Points.
Booking program: The loyalty account that displays the award, charges the miles, and issues the ticket.
Operating airline: The airline providing the aircraft and crew. Its name appears beside “Operated by” in the result.

How partner awards work

Airlines form individual partnerships and larger alliances. A booking program may be allowed to sell some award seats operated by a partner.

You spend miles with the booking program; you do not transfer airline miles to the operating airline.
The operating airline decides what partner inventory to release.
Each booking program can set its own price, fees, routing rules, and cancellation policy.
A codeshare flight number does not by itself prove partner-award availability.

Read the evidence correctly

Possibility and availability are different.

Possible route

Historical evidence suggests an airline has operated between the airports. It does not confirm your travel date.

Possible points path

A documented relationship or alliance lead suggests a program may reach that airline. It does not confirm a seat.

Live award

The booking program currently shows your exact flight, cabin, seats, mileage price, and cash charges. This is what you need before transferring.

Why a flight may not appear

It is sold for cash but has no award seat.
The operating airline kept the seat for its own members.
A partner can see fewer seats or different cabins.
The booking program does not support that route or connection.
The award requires a phone agent or a different search method.

Five expensive mistakes

Assuming every airline in an alliance is automatically bookable.
Searching only the operating airline when you plan to spend another program’s miles.
Ignoring taxes, surcharges, transfer blocks, or delays.
Comparing different cabins, traveler counts, or trip directions.

Can I move miles from one airline to another?

Usually no. Partner awards let one program book another airline; they do not normally convert one airline’s miles into another airline’s miles.

Does finding a cash ticket mean an award exists?

No. Cash inventory and award inventory are separate. The award must appear in the program where you intend to spend miles.

Does an alliance guarantee access?

No. It is a strong research clue, but the exact airline, route, cabin, and program rules still matter.

Why might two programs charge different amounts?

Each program controls its own award pricing, surcharges, routing rules, and promotions—even for the same operated flight.
